recently I was on the outer stretch of duxbury beach by myself

when an enormous flock of migrating dunlins came by

they look quite different in the summer

but this is their winter appearance:

they huddle in a large group, this one more than one thousand

they fly in unison in a beautiful choreographed ballet

their white undersides sometimes showing

then in a flash their brown dark coats

then they land again very tired

they curl together

and sleep
